The Essentials of Nordic Walking Equipment

Special Nordic Walking poles are the alpha and omega of this activity. The essential equipment for Nordic Walking includes specially designed poles, supportive footwear, comfortable clothing, and optional accessories like gloves or a small backpack. Unlike trekking, Nordic Walking relies on pole technique to engage the upper body, so gear choice directly affects performance and comfort.

1. Nordic Walking Poles

  • Purpose-built Nordic Walking poles (not trekking poles) with ergonomic grips and wrist straps
  • Lightweight materials like carbon fiber or aluminum
  • Metal tips for trails and soft ground
  • Rubber “paws” for pavement or hard surfaces
  • Adjustable or fixed length depending on user preference and height

2. Footwear

  • Supportive walking shoes or trail shoes with good grip
  • Flexible soles for natural foot movement
  • Breathable materials for comfort across seasons

3. Clothing

  • Moisture-wicking, breathable layers
  • Weather-appropriate outerwear (e.g. windbreaker, waterproof jacket)
  • Reflective elements for visibility in low light

4. Optional Accessories

  • Gloves: Prevent blisters and improve grip
  • Small backpack or waist pack: For water, phone, or snacks
  • Hat and sunglasses: For sun protection
  • Fitness tracker or pedometer: To monitor progress

*WHAT NOT TO USE*

  • Trekking poles: Heavier, lack proper wrist straps, and don’t support the Nordic Walking technique
  • Loose or unstable footwear: Can cause strain or imbalance

Technology that makes a difference ...

Techniques

The basis of Nordic Walking is the correct technique. It is not just about "walking with poles", but learning to naturally incorporate their movement into walking. The correct step starts from the heel, is transferred over the entire foot and ends with the stick sticking out just behind the body. The shoulders remain relaxed, the arms move in a natural rhythm, the torso rotates slightly. Thanks to this, the upper half of the body is also involved in the movement - the arms, back and deep stabilising muscles, which normally do not work much when walking.

If you use the right technique when Nordic Walking with poles, you will multiply the effect of classic walking without much effort. With proper simultaneous movement of your arms and legs, you engage 600 muscles, i.e. 90% of all muscles. At the same time, your heart rate remains at a level at which you feel comfortable. With such movement, you will burn up to 400 calories per hour.

Our Nordic Walking lessons typically cover posture, pole technique, coordination, fitness progression, and safety - all tailored to your goals and ability level.
